Vent

I recently learned a new word in Spanish. It’s “desahógate.” I heard it used at a men’s meeting at church, but I had no clue what it meant. So I looked it up.

The infinitive is “desahogar.” It means “to vent.”

In English, we understand the need to vent, to get something off your chest. But a funny thought came to mind as I pondered “vent.” It was a picture of a little, white metal grate. An actual vent. How innocuous. How inconsequential. But this? This is essential.

But allow me to deconstruct the Spanish word desahogar like this: des- + ahogar.

“Des” is like the English “un” - like undo, untie, unbind.

“Ahogar” is to drown.

Venting can be a lifesaver! Un-drown. Or “get out what’s drowning you.” It’s a powerful word picture!

On a long enough timeline, everyone needs a coach. We need someone outside of our context we can vent to. Someone who understands us and helps us vent in the healthiest ways. Someone who can help us create a path toward improving things so we don’t end up here a year from now. Venting again.
