Golf Club Faith
There was a famous golfer who was visiting the king of a country. The king wanted to give him a gift, so he asked him what he liked. The golfer said, “I collect golf clubs.” They chatted some more, and then the golfer went home.
He waited in great anticipation, hoping to see a brown truck drive up and deliver a big box with a nice set of golf clubs or, better yet, a golden putter studded with diamonds! He was hopeful. But a week passed, and then two. Nothing.
Finally, six weeks after his visit to the king, there was a delivery for him. The carrier knocked on the door, and the huge smile on the man’s face disappeared when he opened the door and saw that what was being delivered was only an envelope from the king. When he opened the envelope, he saw…a property deed to a five hundred acre golf club.
I heard this story in 2005, but “Golf Club Faith” has stuck with me. Let God’s character surprise you. He is a good Father, a kind King, a righteous Ruler, and a generous Creator. There’s nothing He can’t do.
Something happened to us on August 20, 2021 that was similar.
We visited a goat farm because we were interested in learning about possibly raising a goat or two. The owners (and veteran missionaries) gave us a tour of the farm. We asked if we could rent the house and do ministry there, and a week later, we decided to rent a house on their beautiful 25-acre property.
Did you get that? We went looking for goats and ended up living on a goat farm.
This completely caught us off guard! For the last three years, we had been dreaming, searching, praying, giving up, and then praying again FOR THIS VERY KIND OF PLACE!
- lots of land
- a view of the city
- evergreen trees
- the space for others to stay
- big living room with a fireplace
- proximity to an existing ministry
- a place to fix up
- within our budget
The only thing that wasn’t on our list was renting a place rather than buying it.
As you drive the one-third mile, giant cypress tree-lined lane to the house, Psalm 23 is written on national-park-style wooden signs.
A creek winds through the wooded property, and there are stunning views of the eastern side of the Central Valley. There are even several lime trees! It’s the perfect mix of forest and tropical plants.
There’s much work to do on our house - installing all-new electricity, replacing porch roofs, repairing flooring and termite damage, plumbing, deep cleaning, painting, building a fence, buying appliances… it’s a long list. BUT we are aiming to move by Thanksgiving.
I wanted to share this with our Fertilizer community for these reasons:
1. To have you rejoice with us at the LORD’s provision and to encourage your faith as you pray and wait for your “golf club.”
2. To awaken the dream of bringing your worship team to Costa Rica for a transformative Missional Worship Retreat.
Dios es bueno!
