The Tension of Uniqueness

Being who you are isn’t only important. It’s vital. If you push into who you are more deeply, into who God designed and called you to be, you will have more impact and bear more fruit.

But there can be a cost.

Not everyone will understand you. You will repel some people. But the right people, those you are called to serve and reach, will be attracted.

I was once at a worship conference where the band who was leading was unique. They neither sounded like every other band, nor did they aspire to do so. I wasn’t personally drawn or compelled by what they were doing. You could kinda tell that the crowd wasn’t either. They mostly spectated.

But show up any Sunday at their church, and the congregation is eating it up! They are so responsive and engaged. They absolutely love how and what their team does.

See?

But should this team be discouraged that “the whole world” doesn’t get them? Nope, not for a minute. They must continue becoming the best version of themselves. They must push for excellence. They must listen to the LORD and wholeheartedly pursue His unique calling for them.

Just like you must. You and your team.

We try so hard to cover other people’s songs each Sunday. There are some fantastic worship cover bands out there. And some…not fantastic ones.

Both miss their true callings.

Why not have a sit down with your team at this week’s rehearsal and discuss this question: “If we would become more of who God made us uniquely to be, what would it sound and look and feel like?”

Then begin to take steps to experiment and explore. Be curious and cautiousless. Make up words even! LOL

Dive into scripture and look for models of worship that seem to fit you and try them on.

Be completely humble and unoffendable as you try, fail, and succeed.

Make compelling music that sounds nothing like “what’s out there already.”

Notice who is resonating. Is it who you’re called to serve? If so, thumbs up!
